Summary: What a charming book. I was wandering through the library, looking for something to read when I picked up Bobby's Girl. The blurb on the back, which by the way is wrong, looked interesting. According to it, Kathy the alien, was here on Earth hiding from her enemies, and no one on Earth knew that she was an alien. The reality is much more interesting. Her friends know that she is from another world, but they love her so much, they just don't care. They help her settle in to a life in LA and are prepared to defend her. The book is engaging and humorous. I read it in a single sitting, and boy is my behind tired! :-))).I would recomend this to anyone looking for something a little different.

Summary: I really enjoyed this book, and was delighted to find it at amazon.com since it wasn't in any of the bookstores I've ever visited. I especially enjoyed the elaborate descriptions of the marketplaces and caravanserais as Tamai traveled along the Silk Road to the Forbidden Empire. Still, I wish I had read the prequel, Flameweaver, first (although the plot is easy enough to follow with or without having read the original book).

Summary: I found this at the library and I loved it. It's fun, exciting, and original. I wish I could be more specific but I haven't read it in a while (the library's copy went missing and it's hard to find out-of-print books). Trust me though, it's worth the search.

The Hive Intel conglomerate wants the lifelog and hires Jak to get it. It's a simple job, until other spies-including Ambassador Dujuv, Uncle Sib, and Jak's evil ex-girlfriend-arrive on Mars and turn the assignment into a wild ride of mind control, murder, and looming interplanetary war. For the lifelog contains a devastating secret that can overturn the status quo of whole worlds-a secret that Hive Intel will suppress at all costs. In the past, Jak has completed missions by betraying his friends. Now in order to succeed, Jak Jinnaka must betray the entire human race...

Summary: The Jak Jinnaka series is getting better; not that it was bad at first, (I have yet to read anything by John Barnes that was less than very good) but "A Princess of the Aerie" is a bit better than the first novel in the series, "The Duke of Uranium," and the third novel, "In the Hall of the Martian King" is the first one that rises to five stars. While all three of these semi-comic space operas are enjoyable, Barnes really hits his stride with the third novel. But the first two, albeit not Barnes' best, are very enjoyable, and I would recommend reading them in order. No, I won't summarize the story here; other reviewers have already done that at least as well as I could, probably better, so why be redundant?

Summary: Will we ever colonize space, and if we do will our settlements be more like EPCOT Center or a trailer park? Skylife: Space Habitats in Story and Science takes a broad-ranging look at space colonies through the eyes of some of this century's greatest science fiction writers. Edited by Gregory Benford and George Zebrowski, the volume is largely optimistic, even given the writers' urgent need to pose problems for their characters. Arthur C. Clarke's 1957 story "The Other Side of the Sky" contains nearly every important element of today's (and tomorrow's) space program: communications satellites, space shuttles, and orbital stations. David Brin's "Tank Farm," as grim and bleak as its title, still offers hope against the technological and psychological barriers to space travel. Thirteen other pieces, including one each by the editors and nonfiction by Larry Niven and Isaac Asimov, round out a collection spanning 60 years of forward thinking. The editors' introduction is an absorbing, concise history of the collusion between scientists and authors to imagine and promote space colonization, from Jonathan Swift to Gerard O'Neill and Freeman Dyson. Seven full-color plates illustrate conceptions of our future extraterrestrial life that are alternately high-tech and idyllic. As the space program returns to public prominence, we would do well to consider the words of those who have already thought deeply about how we can best adapt to space. --Rob Lightner

Summary: This is an interesting experimental fantasy: the conceit is that Sue, a housewife and mother of three who's thoroughly sick of cleaning her kitchen (etc. etc.), turns loose her lively imagination and creates an Interior Life: a medieval good vs. evil (Darkness vs. Light) fantasy that's a bit generic, but has some lively and clever touches. Then the characters in Sue's imagination start giving her advice in RL....In RL/OTL, Sue's husband Fred is bucking for promotion to manager at the local Home Depot. Fred's boss's boss is an unctuous womanizer who comes on to Sue at a dinner party. She swats him down; he keeps trying. It gets quite weird. Sue never forgets that she's making up her interior voices -- she doesn't think she's going crazy -- but she takes her characters' imaginary lives (and advice) pretty seriously. Of course, Sue herself is an imaginary character, created by a pseudonymous author.... Heydt intermixes fantasy and real-life with no typographic indication of what's what [note 1]. This works pretty well, but can be confusing and, at times, precious. As I got deeper into the book, I got more interested in Sue and started skipping over the more generic fantasy episodes -- though the fantasy does come to a rousing and effective finish. And Sue's a new woman: she's redecorated her house, reinvigorated her marriage, and gotten the PTA involved in building a new computer lab at her kids' school. The weird womanizing boss is still around, too.The Interior Life was Heydt's first novel, and is to some extent apprentice-work ("There is a great host," Denis said, "several hundreds at least, on cats, coming slowly toward us."). I don't regret reading it, but would add a mild caveat to the fulsome praise in rasfw that led me to read the book. Perhaps I should add that I'm just an occasional fantasy-reader.Note 1). Apparently the author intended the typefaces to be different.

Summary: I read this book when it was first published -- I think in a library copy. I was just a kid, and at that time hadn't really decided I would be a professional writer. But I loved the book. I don't write this particular style, true, but I enjoy reading it. And I enjoyed it more as a kid. As a budding writer, this book taught me the value of vivid characters who behave in a consistent manner. I learned one of Robert A. Heinlein's rules from this book -- that what a writer is selling is entertainment. That your work competes for the book-buyers beer money. Later, when I saw R.A.H. articulate that rule, I understood what he was talking about. For myself, I slowly hatched the ambition to grow up to give other people the kind of sheer, soul-satisfying, good READ that Nelson S. Bond gave to me. Of course, there were many other authors that contributed to that ambition, but you know what? I bought this book at a convention at a premium price in the 1970's - and I still have it on my treasure shelf. As a professional reviewer and teacher of writing, I recommend this book for readers in the 10-16 age group -- and those mature enough to be able to enjoy a book aimed at younger readers without being embarrassed. If you like Farscape, Stargate SG-1, and/or Star Trek's new ENTERPRISE -- you really should read this book. This is their source-material. Parents should read this book with an idea to judging at what age their own children would be able to appreciate it. But they'll be asking you what you're laughing at, you'll be having such a howling good time reading. This kind of writing is timeless and can appeal to readers of all ages, if they're mature enough to enjoy for the sake of enjoying. And this is the kind of book no home sf/f library should be without. Live Long and Prosper, Jacqueline Lichtenberg

Summary: This book is exactly what it claims to be. It is an excellent reference book laid out in an easy to read and intellectually pleasing format. It does contain a few minor inconsistincies but you can figure them out for yourself. If you play a game such as GURPS Uplift, this is an invaluable resource. Just one warning: this book does have a few spoilers in it so you might want to read the Uplift series first.
