Summary: Forward! is a collection of short stories about humanity set in a fairly wide variety of general sci-fi situations, with varying degrees of cohesion. The story I recall the best was about a colonized planet in the human sphere of influence. Details were somewhat sketchy, but humans had settled onto it, but there was a native, aboriginal-stage civilization living in the forests, while the settlers planted fields and subsistance farmed. As an unintentional consequence of their growing slash-and-burn tactics, a large force of adolescent natives attacked a settlement. A lone boy, the only survivor of the initial attacks, fought for days against tens of thousands of the natives from inside a fort, in an Alamo-style defence. It was a mournful story, well-written and engaging. The overall quality of the stories was decent, and the book is worth reading.

Summary: Hours before he is to be knighted, Will Odosson is told that he will not be his father's heir: he will meet death, and his younger brother will inherit. Doomed, how should Will spend the life that remains to him? He leaves home as planned to fight in tourneys, and death strikes all around him as he travels toward his betrothed's home. Will intends to release Isobel from her vow, figuring she won't want a foredoomed husband, but before he can explain his visit, Isobel disappears. His search for her entangles him in plots and magic. Prepared as he is to meet death, Will has a lot of living to do first.

Summary: The theme of "Supermen: Tales of the Posthuman Future" is the belief that humanity will be able to colonize other planets only by radically altering itself through genetic engineering and/or cybernetics. Editor Gardner Dozois, 12-time winner of science fiction's Hugo Award for Best Editor, has assembled 26 superb speculations by many of SF's best writers, from veteran visionaries like Greg Egan and Bruce Sterling to cutting-edge newcomers like David Marusek and Charles Stross. These stories first appeared between 1953 and 2000 (a majority between 1991-2000). They are pure, often hard SF, with powerful, sometimes frightening, always believable characters. "Supermen" is recommended to SF readers who won't mind that women make up only two of the contributors and barely more of the protagonists. Mr. Dozois has also edited a companion volume about remaking worlds, "Worldmakers: SF Adventures in Terraforming". "--Cynthia Ward"

Summary: The forces of evil, both natural and supernatural, are poised to prey on the folk of the hamlets and hollows: witches, demons, and criminals of more than one century. But first they'll have to overcome some very unusual residents of the hills and valleys. One is David Drake's unforgettable creation, Old Nathan the Wizard. He doesn't claim much for his magical powers, but they're real enough for what they are-and besides, he hasn't forgotten how to use his long flintlock rifle. Enter the gritty, realistic world of Old Nathan, a backwoodsman who talks to animals and says he'll face the Devil himself-and who in the end will have to face the Devil in very fact. A century later, very different interlopers, from criminals to snooping college professors, are poking around the hills, up to no good. But a very unusual family, the Hogbens, are likely to cause more trouble than unwelcome visitors can handle, as Henry Kuttner relates. They're a family of mutants, with very unusual powers, and city folk who cause trouble are likely to suddenly find unbelievable-and unpleasant-things happening to them. But not all of the trouble is caused by humans, as the Slade family find out when Eric Flint and Ryk E. Spoor relate how a Kentucky family finds itself caught in the middle of a struggle between battling groups of the creatures who live deep underground and are the basis from the old legends of gnomes. The Slades have to make sure that the right gnomes win-or an earthquake will wipe out everyone in at least four states. Magic, mutants, and mountain folk add up to an unusual volume, with adventure ranging from the grim and eerie to the wildly comic.

Summary: Let me first admit that I am one of the - I presume - large numbeer of people who rush to buy all of Drake's books. (BTW, I wish he would write a book set in Vietnam, either fiction or non-fiction to get his 11th Cav days off his chest. War is hell when you're smart and have an imagination...) This one was something of a novelty. Anumber of the stories are ones Drake did for other anthologies. Thus I missed them the first time around. Some are extremely well done, some aren't so great but still a pleasant diversion. Don't get me wrong, if you like Drake read this book. If you haven't read Drake yet, start with one of the Slammer's compilations.

Summary: While Ehren was away on a foolish errand for the First Level Ministry, Benlan, his king and best friend, was assassinated, along with most of the king's guard. Now, a member of the First Level, Varien, has ordered to stop his ongoing search for the king's murderers. Many years ago, King Benlan's brother, Dannel, set off across the Barrenlands, a near impossible feat for a man alone, to be with the woman he loved. Now, the First Level Ministry wants Ehren to find Dannel and his family and "neutralize" them. They want no one trying to make a claim for the throne. By now, Ehren is almost certain in his suspicions that there is a traitor among the First Level wizards. Ehren sets out to find Dannel and his family. When Ehren finds Dannel's children, Laine and Shette, in a merchant caravan, he doesn't tell them what his mission is. He just travels with them for a while. He grows quite attached to them on the trip. He's gathered a lot of information on his trip, and has grown even surer of Varien's involvement with Benlan's death. Now Ehren is determined to protect Dannel's family and get his revenge against Varien. Barrenlands is a good story with likable characters. You can feel Ehren's pain at his friend's death and determination to do what is right. Durgin keeps the story to the point, rather than branching out into plots and subplots. The story is fast-paced and exciting. Very enjoyable.
